    1. UPDATE TO THIS POST 4/18/14 11:25 p.m. BOTH DOLLS ARE NOW SOLD
      Hi Joy!
They are both painted cloth dolls. They aren’t on the website yet. I had to put up the blog post first, so that we could link the website listing to the blog post (so that people can view extra photos of the dolls – as the website only has space for 2 per item). It’s sort of a chicken and egg type of thing. Trying to get the blog post, website listing and a Spring Newsletter all with hotlinks is a bit of pain… the blog posts usually go up first, followed by the website, then finally the emails/newsletter. You just happened to catch us in the middle of it all 🙂
Here is the text for the website listings:
Mae – A Portrait Face New England Rag Doll

Mae is an 18 inch tall portrait face doll, made entirely of cloth. I painted her childlike face using artist oils over gesso. Mae’s face is loosely based on those of two antique painted cloth dolls in my personal collection. Her body is made of cotton muslin, which I aged using dyes. She is wearing a silk plaid dress, with black velvet trim. The skirt of the dress is cartridge pleated into the bodice. I made tiny brown leather shoes for her, which have scalloped tops and vintage ribbon laces. Her bonnet is made from painted straw trimmed with antique lace, with velvet ribbon ties.

Mae and her dear friend Sophie are the two portrait face New England rag dolls that were in my article in the Winter 2014 issue of Prims magazine. They are two of the five flat face head variations that I made for my Izannah Walker doll making students. Class members can use the five different heads with their Izannah class patterns. The bonus patterns are available to class members through the class discussion site free of charge.

If you already own one of my 18 to 18-1/2 inch reproduction Izannah Walker dolls, then your doll and Mae can share clothes, since they wear the same size!

Sophie – A Portrait Face New England Rag Doll
Sophie is an 18 inch tall portrait face doll, made entirely of cloth. I painted her face with artist oils over gesso. Her design was inspired by several 19th century styles of painted cloth dolls, including Columbian, Moravian and Presbyterian dolls. Her body is made of cotton muslin, which I aged with dyes. All of the fabric and lace used to make her clothing is antique and is repurposed from garments, quilts and household linens that were too damaged to be restored. Her bonnet is made from antique crocheted lace.

    1. Good Morning Joy!

Sorry! They did sell very quickly and are both going together to an amazing new home.
Thanks so very much for your interest in Sophie and Mae! 🙂

      Paula

  2. Paula, I noticed the Sophie doll has a different hand/arm without painting on it, but looks like it was dye stained a bit. I do like that hand very much. Could you make it available to us on the Izannah Walker class discussion page. Fondly, Mary Goddard.

  3. Mary,

It is a slightly different hand. I cut it free hand, but I’d be happy to draw out something similar for the class members. I’ll put it on my to-do list 🙂

    Paula
