SOLD I’d Like to Introduce You to my Latest Reproduction of Tilly Lamb, who is Currently Available for Sale…

Thank you for coming to meet my newest reproduction of my antique Izannah Walker doll Tillie Lamb.

TILLY LAMB ~ $2445 SOLD. Tilly Lamb has a somewhat unique body with larger, plumper arms and painted boots that are fashioned differently than other Izannah Walker dolls. I’ve really only seen these features on the one other doll that I know of that is made like Tillie Lamb. I truly love the endearing slightly bolder folk art quality that this gives her She is 20 inches tall, from the back of her heels to the top of her head. Her toes point downward another 2 inches.

CLOTHING

I’ve chosen some amazing fabrics for this very special doll. Her dark brown figured dress is made from a sheer madder dyed cotton with a window pane check weave. This fabric came from a remanent of a c. 1860’s skirt that I am sure must have had a matching bodice. Even though someone had previously cut into the garment, I could tell that it had once been a very wide full skirt, tightly gathered at the waist and meant to be worn over layers of petticoats and a caged crinoline (which people now often refer to as a hooped skirt). I fashioned this lovely fabric into a very classic mid 19th century girl’s dress, with very full banded sleeves and a generously full skirt. Next I paired this fantastic madder fabric dress, with a fugitive purple print fabric for her that the sun has turned into a matching shade. The apron I made from this fugitive purple is a copy of the apron that my antique Tillie Lamb often wears. The original apron is one I found in Brimfield many years ago.

Because every girl needs more that one dress, Tilly has a second dress made from a vintage brown gingham check, with short straight, tucked sleeves. Did you know that gingham was original made in Asia, possibly Malaysia, and first appeared in England during the 17th century, when it was introduced by Dutch traders? Originally it began as more of a striped fabric, before becoming the classic woven checks that we are more familiar with.

Tilly’s second skin body covering is a coffee brown glazed cotton that coordinates perfectly with her madder dyed dress and fugitive purple apron. I made her chemise, split pantalettes, and petticoat from antique cotton sheeting and lace.

ACCESSORIES

Around her neck Tilly wears a necklace that I made from vintage bone beads. She has a heart shaped pincushion, made of another wonderful piece of mid 19th century fabric, suspended from a woven brown gingham ribbon. Instructions for this type of pincushion appeared in Eliza Leslie’s book The American Girl’s Book; or Occupation For Play Hours first published in 1831. https://paulawalton.wordpress.com/2011/02/09/two-heart-pincushions-from-the-american-girls-book/

Additionally Tilly comes with a length of fabric tape measure, like the one my original Tilly Lamb often carries in her apron pocket.

This Tilly Lamb reproduction Izannah Walker doll is $2445.00 SOLD

Tilly is a wonderful size to display in antique children’s chairs. Here she is in one of my antique highchairs. Note ~ Her newly painted face does appear a bit glossy in some lights, but as the paint continues to dry and oxidize the sheen will lessen and go away.

SOLD ~ One New Reproduction of my Antique Izannah Walker doll Hannah Available for Sale this evening…

Good evening, and welcome to the sale of my first doll of 2024! I’d like to introduce you to Hannah, who is a reproduction of one of the antique Izannah Walker dolls in my personal collection.

HANNAH$2430 SOLD

Hannah is 18.5 inches tall. She has a pressed cloth head, just like Izannah Walker’s original dolls. Both her head and limbs are painted in oils. Her second skin body covering is a reproduction of an antique alphabet print fabric that you can sometimes find on the cloth bodies of various antique dolls. Hannah’s painted boots have sweet scalloped tops.

As something a little bit special to celebrate this first doll of 2024 I have sewn a wardrobe for Hannah. She has three dresses, each made from antique fabric and notions. Underneath her dresses she wears a chemise and petticoat that I made from antique cotton sheeting, just like you will find on the original dolls. Her pantalettes are antique ones, from that very large collection of antique doll undergarments that I purchased a few years ago. Hannah’s pantalettes are very plain, but they have one detail that I dearly love. If you look closely you’ll see that their maker had to piece the fabric on one half of them, because she evidently didn’t quite have a large enough scrap of fabric to cut them out whole.

Hannah’s dresses and petticoat have deep hems and growth tucks. One of her dresses is trimmed in rows of antique black grosgrain ribbon. Each of the three dresses have sleeves that are of a different design than the other two dresses, all three have extra fabric in their skirts to make them very full. To go over her dresses she has a pinner apron, with a large pocket that is just perfect for holding Valentines and other treasures. Her apron ties in back with a wide sash that makes a very pretty bow.

Hannah also comes with a heart shaped pincushion that hangs from a silk ribbon. Eliza Leslie gave directions for just such a pincushion in the Amusing Work section of her iconic The American Girl’s Book; or, Occupation for Play Hours , Boston: Munroe and Francis; New York: C.S. Francis, 1831.

All of my dolls are sold on a “first come” basis. To purchase Hannah email me at  paula@asweetremembrance.com . Please be aware of how much the doll costs BEFORE you send your request to buy. You are welcome to ask questions, but please note that asking a question is not the same as making a commitment to buy and will not “hold your place in line” if someone else asks to buy the doll.  Checks or money orders are preferred, Paypal is also accepted for payment. Free priority mail shipping & full insurance to any U.S. address. International orders ~ exact postage + $25 handling fee to help offset the extra time required for international shipping ~ check with me to make sure your international address is one I ship to. Pink!

For those of you who are familiar with the Facebook group Friends of the UFDC Doll Museum you will be aware that the theme for this week’s posts is PINK. My contribution to the challenge was a compilation of some of the many pink dresses I have made for my reproduction Izannah Walker dolls I’ve looked a little further back into my photo archive and found even more pink dresses! I hope you enjoy seeing them all again as much as I have.

… you may be able to tell that all the Izannahs and I are excessively fond of pink.

Think pink ❤

Using My Patterns for Select Pieces of James’ Clothing, Published in the April 2023 Issue of Antique Doll Collector Magazine ~ How to Enlarge the Pattern Pieces

The April issue of Antique Doll Collector magazine is out, which means my final installment of James’ story and the accompanying patterns are now available for you to use. ❤

Emma Blue and Sarah Jane were quite excited when this envelope arrived in yesterday’s mail from the subscription department of Antique Doll Collector magazine! The pretty quilt block stamps made it feel like the magazine had been giftwrapped!

You’ll find my article on pages 38-44 of the April issue. The patterns themselves are on pages 43 and 44. To use the patterns the first thing you will need to do is to enlarge the pattern back to 100%. The short answer to “How much do I enlarge them?” is 14.3%, which is a pretty awkward percentage that you may not be able to program into your printer. If you enlarge the patterns by 15% they will be fairly close to my original size. “Why do I have to go to the trouble of enlarging them?” Good question! I provided the patterns to ADC at full size, but due to the space considerations, and the physical size of the magazine, the graphic designer needed to shrink the patterns down to fit into the allotted space.

When you enlarge the pattern to 100% of it’s original size it should fit perfectly on an 8.5 x 11 inch piece of paper. It’s very important to remember that I made these patterns to specifically fit a 17 inch Izannah Walker boy. If you would like to use the patterns to dress a different size Izannah Walker doll, or another type of mid-nineteenth century doll, such as a papier-mache, china, parian, or rag doll you will need to completely alter the size and fit of the patterns. Always, always, always make a muslin to check the fit of any pattern you are making from antique fabric!

Now that I have given you the short answer “how much do I enlarge the pattern?” let me walk you through how to get that answer:

  1. Measure the 1 inch key that is shown on pages 43 and 44 along with the pattern. The key measures 7/8th of an inch.
  2. 7/8 x 8/7 = 1
  3. 8/7 = 1.1428571429 so the pattern needs to be 114.3% (rounded up to the nearest tenth of a percent) of the size it was printed in the magazine, another way to say that is enlarge the pattern by 14.3%
  4. To double check your work 0.875 x 1.1428571429 = 1

I’ll be posting some more tips for using these patterns in the near future. ❤

A fun tidbit. Looking through the open doorway of the main floor “Bedroom”* can you spy the stenciled walls that inspired the stenciling in the second floor chamber, that the doll’s use as their bedroom, in their own very tall house? I painted both the full size walls, and the miniature versions, using historic stencil patterns.

*(The only chamber actually called a “bedroom” in the 18th century because these tiny rooms adjoining kitchens, next to the cooking hearths, were just large enough to hold a bed and little else.)

Both of this evening’s dolls have a special alphabet body covering or “second skin”. It seemed appropriate for autumn and the beginning of the school year. I’ve always been charmed by these illustrated letter prints, which are most commonly seen on antique china dolls. This fabric print is also some times known as an “educational print”, and if you search for them you will find quite a few different ones on the bodies of a variety of antique dolls.

DOLL A. Isane $1595.00 SOLD

Doll A Isane

This Isane is approximately 18 inches tall. She comes fully dressed in a handmade chemise, pantalettes, petticoat and dress. Her brown print dress has extra fullness in the skirt and two graduated growth tucks. The sleeves of the dress are also tucked. All fabrics, lace and buttons are antique. PLEASE NOTE I am offering this doll for sale now, but it will take approximately a week to ten days for her to ship. Perhaps you noticed that she has two left arms! Sadly this is not the first time this has happened to me. When I started sewing her together I made the startling discovery that she didn’t have a right arm! lol So I am going to have to make her one and multiple coats of paint are going to have to dry before I can ship her.

Gently Worn and Well Loved Isabeau

Doll 1 ~ A Gently Worn and Well Loved Version of Isabeau ~ $1695.00 SOLD

This pressed cloth doll was made in a handmade mold of my original antique Izannah Walker doll Isabeau. Her paint surface shows the craquelure and surface texture of the antique doll. She is dressed in an antique doll petticoat, antique pair of bloomers, and a chemise and dress made of antique fabrics and notions. Her dress has a great deal of extra fabric in both the skirt and bodice, which is something very special, as I very rarely have a large enough amount of a particular antique fabric to allow me to do this. The sleeves of the dress have two small decorative tucks, the skirt has a deep growth tuck and deep hem. She is also wearing a blue hand strung bone bead necklace.

A More Perfect Surface Version of Isabeau

Doll 2 ~ A More Perfect Surface Version of Isabeau ~ $1950.00 SOLD

This pressed cloth doll was made in a handmade mold of my original antique Izannah Walker doll Isabeau. After I made the mold I poured a plaster positive, then corrected all of the surface texture so that the plaster positive would represent Isabeau more like she was when she was newly made. Next I created a new mold, which I used to make this sweet, demure doll. She is 18-3/4 inches tall. This Isabeau has scalloped topped painted boots, and an off white linen second skin. She is dressed in an antique doll petticoat, antique pair of bloomers, and a chemise and dress made of antique fabrics and notions. Her dress is made from two coordinating double pink fabrics. The sleeves of her dress are gathered and banded. She has an amazing sunbonnet, that I reproduced from an antique doll bonnet in my collection. The bonnet took me two days to make, the original antique doll bonnet and this reproduction are both made in the same manner as actual human bonnets and are extremely detailed.

All of my dolls are sold on a “first come” basis. Email me at p.walton.asweetremembrance@gmail.com to purchase this Isabeau. You are welcome to ask questions, but please be aware that asking a question is not the same as making a commitment to buy and will not “hold your place in line” if someone else asks to buy the doll. She is dressed in an antique doll petticoat, antique pair of bloomers, and a chemise and dress made of antique fabrics and notions. Her dress is made from two coordinating double pink fabrics. The sleeves of her dress have delicate tucks. She has an amazing sunbonnet that I reproduced and slightly modified, to make it work for sweet petite Izzybelle, from and antique doll bonnet in my collection.
