Just a little something pretty to dream about as winter storms bring mountains of snowflakes swirling down. Photos of a beautiful antique Moravian cloth doll to muse over next to a roaring fire…

This doll is part of the New Milford Historical Society Museum collection.

My name is Paula Walton. I’m a working craftsperson. I’ve been self-employed since 1986, when I started selling the items that I make under the name A Sweet Remembrance. Among other things, I am a doll maker, a dressmaker that specializes in reproduction women’s and children’s clothing, maker of spun cotton ornaments and holiday figures, and a freelance designer. Upon occasion I write magazine articles and am a Craftsperson in Residence. I teach and do demonstrations quite frequently, plus I was previously the director and curator of a small museum in Connecticut.

Paula, this doll is so beautiful. The very delicate painting has always been a factor of these dolls. I love these dolls and the history that goes with them. As you know I have been collecting the new and vintage Moravian dolls for all my granddaughters. If I have time today (we’re heading to Florida on Wednesday) I will post a picture of my antique Moravian Doll. She even came with a note stating the artist that was painting at that time. It’s 9:30 am and the snow storm has just hit in our area of Vermont. If the roads aren’t clear on Wednesday we’ll wait another day to head out. I have always enjoyed the pristine new white fallen snow. It’s so pretty outside right now. Keep warm everyone and safe if you travel. Mary G.
Mary,
I would love to see a photo of your doll, whenever you have time 🙂 It is still snowing here and blowing, but we are on the outer edge of the storm, so it looks like we won’t be getting as much as was predicted. Brian is outside with the snow blower right now, trying to clean off the drive a first time, so he won’t have such deep snow to move when the storm is over. It looks like we have 6 or 7 inches right now.
I had wondered if you were in Florida yet. Travel safely!

Hi Paula, I love the pictures of this beautiful and very sweet Moravian doll, and as I first looked at her, before I read your caption, I thought it was a doll that you made, because all of your reproduction dolls look like the real thing! Thanks for sharing pictures of her – I always love to see pictures and articles about dolls – it always makes my day! Hope you are keeping toasty and warm, with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book or doll magazine, while the snow falls outside. Snow in New England is so beautiful , though I know it has it’s hazards as well. But I’m sure your home and yard look gorgeous with all of the newly fallen snow! Love, Susie
Hi Susie,
We are warm, with a fire burning brightly in the fireplace! Fortunately the winds haven’t been as bad as predicted, so our electricity is working as steadily as ever. I’ve got the oil lamps filled and ready and water in the bath tubs, just in case.
Even though she isn’t an Izannah, she is one of my very favorite Moravian dolls so I thought I’d go ahead and post photos of her. I love her face, and prefer it to every other Moravian doll I’ve seen. So often you don’t get a chance to see all of the layers of clothing and what the body looks like, so I thought I’d share 🙂
I hope you are all snug and warm today too. My sister told me it was 50 degrees in Nebraska yesterday. So the mid-west sounds much better than New England at the moment!
❤ Paula
Hello Paula, Just a note to warm your cold fingers and toes. We are about to deal with the first 2015 heatwave. Today 37C tomorrow 39 C and Monday 39and up. And on it goes. I love the Moravian doll, what a sweet face, and of course I am always interested in the undies etc. I Enjoy your hot chocolate and wood fire , I’ll be sipping lemon squash and making salmon mousse for Sunday night’s tea All the best from Australia Cheers Janet Garrard
Janet,
It was 7 degrees below zero (F) when I woke up this morning and we have over 15 inches of snow on the ground. Think of us when you are feeling over heated!
