Happy Third Thursday! This is my (almost) monthly introduction of new dolls, doll clothing and doll accessories ❤

Today my offerings include the third reproduction of Charlcie SOLD, a 23 inch reproduction Izannah Walker doll. she comes with a wonderful wardrobe. ~~I also have two red and white dress for my 18 – 19 inch dolls, they would also work for Anna since she is a bit chubbier than the other smaller dolls.~~ Plus something exciting! Limited edition greeting cards and badges, plus a larger cut & stitch Isabeau printed dolly.

Charlcie SOLD – ~~$2200.~~

This is my third reproduction of Charlcie. The original doll is one that I purchased for my own collection, and is only an Izannah Walker head on a c.1900 baby doll cloth body, so I will be making her a new reproduction body. The antique Izannah Walker doll is named Charlcie, after my great-grandmother, Charlcie Savannah Suzybelle Walker.

This Charlcie is 23 inches tall. Her body is made of new 100% cotton, stuffed with organic cotton stuffing. Her head is pressed cloth and is made of silk stockinette, which has been painted with multiple layers of artist’s oils, as have her arms and legs. Her “second skin” body covering is made from antique raspberry pink glazed cotton. She is dressed entirely in antique fabrics, laces, and buttons. Her clothing includes a chemise, split pantelettes, a petticoat, two dresses, a nightgown and an apron. The pink dress is made from an antique woven check cotton. The skirt of the dress has hand sewn cartridge pleating (at the top instead of gathers). The blue dress is an antique indigo and white print cotton. Her nightgown is a re-purposed antique baby gown and her apron is made from two antique double pink fabrics. It took me approximately 140 hours (of actual working time) to create the doll and clothing. I made her using the same methods and same materials (with just one or two exceptions where the materials are no longer available and I’ve had to use modern equivalents) that Izannah Walker used to make the original dolls.

Welcome to my December 2nd Pop Up Shop, with offerings themed especially for St. Nicholas Day! Many years ago, when my sons were quite young, we lived in Minnesota where my children’s nursery school and many of our neighbors celebrated St. Nicholas Day on December 6th. On the evening of December 5th the children would put their shoes by the front door and leave carrots in the shoes for St. Nicholas’ horse. In the morning they would discover that St. Nicholas had filled their shoes with small toys and treats. ❤ My boys always loved this early December celebration, which heralded in the Christmas season. It was one of my favorite things too… after all what could be better than a holiday celebration in which shoes play a major role? You can probably guess that means I am extremely partial to shoes, which I freely admit 🙂 Doll shoes, baby shoes, new shoes, old shoes… I love them all! So in honor of St. Nicholas Day, and shoes, I am offering the following items for sale.

St. Nicholas Day Pop-Up Shop — Before and After… a decorating idea ❤ Antique Baby Shoes w/ handmade spun cotton carrots to leave out for St. Nicholas’ horse on the night of December 5th, displayed with antique toys, small treats and a spun cotton Santa to depict the items children find left in their shoes. Antique baby shoes and spun cotton carrots sold as a set. Spun Cotton Santa sold separately. All other items are for display purposes only and are not for sale.

It’s a busy day in the doll’s house, as the dolls decorate the parlor and set out their shoes for St. Nicholas. Down in the kitchen freshly baked gingerbread has been left to cool, before being made into into houses…. Drawn by the irresistible smell of their very favorite food, a trio of bears have come to call & made themselves at home.

In the case of more than one person wishing to buy an item, it will go to the first email received. If for some reason the transaction isn’t completed then I will contact the 2nd person in line and ask if they would like to buy the item in question. Depending on where you live, this may make it possible for your items to get to you by Wednesday, December 5th, just in time for St. Nicholas Day… fingers crossed! Although if you are like me, I keep my St. Nicholas themed decorations out until after Christmas.

Handmade Spun Cotton Carrots — * A note about all of the spun cotton items * I hand spin loose cotton fibers in the traditional antique manner to create all of my spun cotton ornaments. Then I hand paint each one. The larger carrots are accented with antique rayon seam binding and the doll size carrots are topped with silk ribbons. Each bunch of carrots has a handwritten note to St. Nicholas ❤

Hanging Glass & Tin Display Cases Large $69 Small $49. I have ~~eight of each~~ 6 small and 7 large available. I love these little cases! They are perfect to show off and protect all kinds of small treasures. I like to keep tiny doll accessories in mine, so that I can admire them while keeping them safe from kittens and little hands. Lovely with found bird’s nests, antique Christmas ornaments, or little St. Nicholas Day displays.

The large cases are 12 inches wide x 9 inches high, with 3 equal sections that have interior glass dividers. The small cases are slightly less than 5 inches wide x 9 inches high.

B – $78.00 Tiny high button baby shoes w/ spun cotton carrots, just the right size for larger dolls. ❤

C – $75.00 Sweet early baby shoes made from faded red and black leather, with brass buttons and spun cotton carrots. One button is missing. Perfect for a large papier-mache or china doll, display or as study shoes for making doll shoes.

D – $95.00 Adorable white button baby shoes and spun cotton carrots. These shoes originally had something glued to the front of them, I have no idea what that was as nothing but a trace of glue remained. I’ve made them crepe paper rosettes, but you could certainly remove the rosettes and add your own trimmings. These shoes close with white mother of pearl buttons, two of which are missing. If you would like replacement buttons, I can add two antique buttons, but I don’t have an exact match.

Gingerbread Color Vintage Mohair Bears

Y – $54.00 Large Fully Jointed Vintage Mohair Bear. Soft, cuddly bear, big enough to give you a “bear hug”! Some moth damage, especially on the paw pads. Wearing vintage baby shoes and mittens made from hand dyed red wool.

Z – $44.00 Unique Vintage Baby Bear. I’ve never seen a bear like this before. She wears a pink oil cloth bib and has a hinged metal mouth, with a hole that leads to her “tummy” which is accessed via a zipper in her back. I’m assuming that the idea is that a child could “feed’ her, then the “food” could be removed by unzipping her back. Sewn joints, considerable moth damage, but still very cute in a zoomy kind of way 🙂 To top everything off she is wearing pink shoes!

AA – $35.00 Happy, Hug-able, Vintage Mohair Bear w/Velvet Paw Pads. Cute fully jointed bear. Some moth damage and a loose neck joint which makes it possible for the head to crock to one side and nod, which is actually very charming. ❤

BB – $95.00 Handmade fully jointed bear, antique white mohair, rod jointed arms and legs, disk jointed neck, glass eyes. My own original design ❤

Humid & Sticky …

94% humidity today and my paint is not drying… so rather than stressing about it I am just going to go with the flow. After all this is August in New England and you can just count on hot, sticky and humid a lot of the time. 🙂 SO, this weeks 3rd Thursday is going to be a clothing event!!! ❤ Come by at noon (eastern time) on Thursday for a fashion show. New Dolls For Sale on the Third Thursday of the Month — Third Thursdays start this coming Thursday, July 20th! I be posting a new doll or two for sale on the third Thursday of almost every month.

I’m starting something new! On the “third Thursday” of each month, with only a couple of exceptions, I’ll be posting a new doll, or two, or three for sale! Some months there will also be clothing and accessories too. ❤

Third Thursdays should be fun! The dolls will be posted at 12 noon Eastern Time here on izannahwalker.com and sold on a first come basis. If you wish to purchase a doll or other item, simply email me at paula@asweetremembrance.com. If more than one person emails about a doll, the email with the earliest time will take precedence. Once a doll has found it’s new home, I will immediately mark it SOLD. If a doll or accessory doesn’t sell on “Third Thursday” then it will be posted on my regular website www.asweetremembrance.com, where you’ll be able to buy it and use the automated secure checkout.

Zanna and Isabeau have asked Cloe to help them get ready for today’s party. They may have gotten a bit more “help” than they anticipated…

“I think the rug would look nice outside the kitchen.”

ANNA IS NOW SOLD. I have one doll made from my Anna mold available for sale. She is a very sweet, worn and well loved doll. Just the right size at 17 inches to be a little sister to other Izannahs in your collection. She has short wispy hair framing her face and tickling the nape of her neck. This Anna is dressed in an amazing antique red print fabric that I found in Brimfield in May. The fabric had never been washed until yesterday and even after one gentle washing still retains it’s crisp sizing. All three pieces of her undergarments are trimmed in tatting. Her short black scallop topped painted boots are embellished with a red scallop outline. As a birthday special she comes with a tiny antique tintype image of a young girl. When you imagine the story of Anna’s life, perhaps this little girl will become her original owner…

Introducing Two New Reproduction Izannah Walker Dolls

I am very happy to tell you that I now have two more molds! I made these molds, just like all of my others, directly from original antique Izannah Walker dolls. This means that I can offer you ten different authentic, all cloth, historically accurate reproduction Izannah Walker dolls!

Pictured below are the four dolls that I will be working on during the next three days as part of my Izannah celebration. After all what better way is there for a doll maker to mark the birthday of her very favorite doll maker than by paying homage to her by reproducing some of her amazing dolls! Lily

I am able to offer you reproductions of Lily due to the amazing generosity of my friend Susie, who owns the real Lily. I am currently in the midst of doing restoration on the original Lily and Susie very kindly told me that she wanted me to make a mold from her while she was here. I’ll be chronicling Lily’s restoration journey here in the upcoming weeks. Lily has a very classic Izannah head and at 17 inches is the middle stair step between my Isabeau and Izzybelle.

This first Lily will be going home with her older sister and namesake ❤

A Second Lily

This Lily will be available for sale for $1250.00 when she is completed. She will come with a full four piece wardrobe which includes a chemise, pantalettes, peticoat and a dress, with painted boots.

Hannah

Hannah recently came to join my Izannah family from the collection of another of my dear friends, Edyth. ❤ I’m honored that she has entrusted me with one of her treasures.

Hannah is 18 inches tall and has such a sweet expression. Just like Lily #2, both of these Hannahs will be for sale once I have finished them. Yes, they also cost $1250.00, have painted boots and come with a full set of clothing made from antique fabrics and notions. 🙂

Today marks the 196th anniversary of Izannah Walker’s birth. She was born in Bristol, Rhode Island on the 25^th day of September in 1817. You may read more details about Izannah’s life in this post. I wish I could invite you all over to my house for cake and silly party games, but since I can’t, I’m doing the next best thing and having a SALE to celebrate the occasion and to say thank you for being such wonderful customers, students and friends. It is such a great pleasure to know other people who love Izannah’s dolls as much as I do!

I have three very special dolls available for this years Birthday Sale. One of them is created from a brand new mold that I made from my friend Mary’s Izannah Walker doll, Anna. Thank you Mary!!! Anna is 17 inches tall, so she is a smaller size than my other dolls and has the look of a younger, chubbier child. All three of these dolls have very aged appearances, befitting young ladies that were made early in Izannah’s doll making career. They each come with two elaborate dresses, full of wonderful little details to delight the heart of any dress maker, a chemise, pantalettes, petticoat and necklace.

Custom Made Dresses and Accessories For Your Doll

Simple dresses made from antique fabric start at $200 apiece. More elaborate dresses with a greater number of tucks, fuller skirts, rows of ribbon or lace trim, embroidery or more costly antique fabrics run from $250 -$275 and may go upwards. Handmade leather shoes are $75. Any custom order is 10% off during the sale. Scroll up to see the new style of dress that I made for Anna #2. The fully lined dress has a slim cut bodice and sleeves, with a cartridge pleated skirt and velvet ribbon trim. The cost of an identical dress is $295, if the dress must be fully lined, or $275 for one with a lined bodice.

Time For A Party

After trying on all their new clothes and posing for their photo shoot, the girls and I spent some time in the kitchen baking Izannah a birthday cake. We all agreed that it was the perfect treat to celebrate the birthday of our very favorite doll maker!

The recipe for the cake came from The Best of Shaker Cooking by Amy Bess Miller and Persis Fuller. I chose this recipe because it is one that would have been in use during Izannah’s lifetime and is filled with apples, the perfect seasonal fruit for an autumn birthday. I picked apples to use from our oldest apple tree. It is a very firm, late season cooking apple that I have never been able to positively identify. We grow our apples organically, so they are not picture perfect, but I’m sure apples just like these would have been a familiar site to Izannah.

Apple Cake

from Shirley Shaker Village

1/3 cup butter

3/4 cup sugar

1 egg

1-1/3 cups flour

1/4 tsp. salt

2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 cup milk

1 tsp. vanilla

3 apples, peeled and chopped

1/4 cup currants or raisins

powdered sugar

ground cinnamon

Cream butter and gradually add 1/2 of the sugar, beating well. Beat egg with remaining sugar, add to first mixture. Sift in flour, salt and baking powder alternately with the m ilk. Flavor with vanilla. Add apples and currants or raisins. Beat well to mix and turn into a well-buttered 9 inch cake tin, square or round.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar and cinnamon, and bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees) for 30 minutes. Makes 1 cake.

These two dolls have already found new homes. Thank you for dropping in to see them! Just for fun, the girls are dressed in antique mourning print fabrics and wool felt hats to celebrate All Hallows Eve. Pack their hats away after Halloween and pose them with antique daguerreotypes or tintypes for a stunning monochromatic year round display.
