My name is Paula Walton. I’m a working craftsperson. I’ve been self-employed since 1986, when I started selling the items that I make under the name A Sweet Remembrance. Among other things, I am a doll maker, a dressmaker that specializes in reproduction women’s and children’s clothing, maker of spun cotton ornaments and holiday figures, and a freelance designer. Upon occasion I write magazine articles and am a Craftsperson in Residence. I teach and do demonstrations quite frequently, plus I was previously the director and curator of a small museum in Connecticut.
Thank you Izannah Walker for inspiring me with your beautiful, intricate painted cloth dolls. For being an enterprising 19th century woman who was able to support herself in a male dominated world. For being the first woman to be granted a United States patent related to doll making. You have changed my life!
“Look! There we are!” “Oh, there’s Lucy and Johne Shedd too!” “Where?” “Let me see!” “Remember that?” “It was so much fun!”
Look what just came! The latest issue of Antique Doll Collector magazine, with my article about the Izannah Walker exhibit that I curated for the Jenny Lind Doll Show in October, AND a wonderful article, by Izannah Walker historian, Monica Bessette about six Walker dolls that she visited while doing research for her new book!

I have an article about the Izannah Walker exhibit that I curated at the Jenny Lind Doll Show last October in the March issue of Antique Doll Collector. Here is a sneak peek of the cover and contents page. The magazine should start mailing to subscribers on 2/22 and be for sale at Barnes and Noble in early March. ❤ Well known Izannah Walker biographer, Monica Bessette, has written a companion article entitled Izannah Dreams, also in the March issue. I can’t wait to read it!
Assistant shopkeepers Hannah and Isabeau have set up the shipping department on the kitchen table… The girls are very organized, they have boxes, packing materials, and a cart – all ready to load with parcels for a trip to the post office.Josephine has been spending her time composing advertisements for the shoppe. “Mistress Walton begs leave to inform her Friends and the Public in general that she intends opening a Pop-Up Shoppe on Tuesday, the 13th inst. with a new and elegant assortment of paper cuttings, stitchery, and love tokens… Mistress Walton takes this opportunity of returning thanks for the great patronage she has already received from her numerous friends… ” Josephine is a devoted reader and she found great inspiration in Advertisements for January, Ackerman’s Repository, Vol. XI, 1814
It has been a cold, snowy, ice covered week here in our sleepy little Connecticut home. Even a commute that is measured in yards, rather than miles, has been treacherous. So rather than working in either of my studios, the dolls and I have been sitting in front of the fire cutting silhouettes. ❤
sketching the outlines for new silhouettes…
Last evening we finally finished hand graining all the frames, mounting the silhouettes and framing them. Now that they are completed we are all ready to open our Valentine Pop-Up Shoppe ❤

A note about the photos, because of the glass there are some reflections in the photos. I also had a problem with static electricity and dust. I dusted, and dusted and dusted some more, but every time I looked again there were little dust particles on the outside of the glass… Needless to say, all of the silhouettes look so much nicer in person :).

Antique Doll Collector has pushed both my article and Monica Bessette’s to their March 2018 issue, in order to devote more space to them. The March issue should mail to subscribers on 2/22. Good heavens! Only 13 days into the new year and already I’m behind!!! With the third Thursday of the month fast approaching on the 18th, I’ve made an executive decision to dispense with my normal “Third Thursday” release of new dolls and/or clothing in January. The glorious thing about being the CEO, and the entire workforce, of my own little domain is that all arguments for or against policy changes are strictly in my own head… so much quieter that way. 🙂
Actually I am incredibly blessed! I just finished writing another article for Antique Doll Collector magazine on New Year’s Day. At the moment I am currently working on the wardrobes for two dolls that are very anxious to begin their travels to their new homes, plus I have a stack of orders for paper cuttings, patterns, doll kits with custom painted heads, spun cotton ornaments, and more… ❤ What artisan wouldn’t be thrilled to have people buying their wares? ❤
So no “Third Thursday” this month… but who knows… perhaps there will be a special “Pop-Up” Valentine event… ❤
goodbye January Third Thursday…. hello Valentine Pop-Up event???
I usually try to do something a little special as a Christmas treat for my very wonderful customers. This year I’ve decided that instead of doing a normal “Third Thursday” today, I’ll have a Christmas sale ❤ So these two reproduction Izannah Walker dolls that I currently have available for sale may be adopted for $250 off of their regular price!!! This pricing is only for these two sweet young ladies, who have both asked Santa for a new homes for Christmas. The sale price is not available on existing or future custom ordered dolls.
